Best ways to Remove Blackheads
You don't need to spend a lot of money on gimmicks in order to remove blackheads. The first rule is to cleanse your face with a non drying (soap free) cleanser. The reason you want a non-drying face wash is because if your skin is dry it will actually produce more oil or sebum, which leads to more blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and acne. a non drying sensitive face wash or cleanser will help wash away excess oil and dead skin particles. You can also use a gentle (and we mean gentle) exfoliant, which will help remove old skin cells, and increase skin renewal which will help your skin become blackhead free.
What causes blackheads?
Blackheads are caused when skin cells produce too much sebum which gets trapped inside a pore. The sebum oxidizes, thus resulting in the dark color of a blackhead (this coloring is strictly from oxidation, not because skin is dirty). Bacteria begins to grow. Initially a blackhead is white. At that time it’s called whitehead. When the sebum and bacteria partially open to the surface, a blackhead occurs. Whiteheads and blackheads are acne forms. The blackhead part, which is on the surface, turns black due to the skin pigment melanin. When the follicular wall breaks and the pore becomes inflamed, pimples form. The best way to get rid of pimples is to get rid of blackheads, that is, to remove the cause of them – excessive oil and dead skin cells, which contain melanin making whiteheads black.
What contributes to blackheads?
Sleeping with makeup on is contributor, not cleaning your face appropriately, or using skin care products that make matters worse. The use of skin-care or makeup products containing ingredients similar to the composition of sebum compounding the condition. Sebum (the oil produced in the pore) is a mixture of triglycerides, fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, cholesterol, and cholesterol esters. All these substances are typically found in thousands of cosmetic products and they can absorb into the pore, adding to the build up of sebum. Interestingly and contrary to popular belief, the ingredients mineral oil and petrolatum cannot absorb into the pore because their molecular size is too large. Both ingredients feel greasy, especially on oily skin, but neither has the consistency or research showing it contributes to blackheads or clogged pores.

Microdermabrasioncan be used to remove stubborn blackheads.
Topical Retinoids or Glycolic Acids: Both are great skin care products to improve skin texture clarity and will help with removing blackheads. We prefer this approach over sqeezing and extracting because using retinoids or Glycolic acids is a long term, and preventative approach. They will help reduce oil secretion and unclog pores by promoting normal functioning of the cells.
Chemical peels: Skin care products with salicyclic acid and chemical peels with glycolic acid are very useful in removing dead skin cells from the pores, effectively and quickly. However, you can not use them if you are already using topical retinoids.
Metallic Extractor: Metallic extractors that have small and round opening in the end can help with removing blackheads. Each individual blackhead can be extracted. Use caution and do not overdo it- beware of redness and inflammation.
Blackhead strips: Blackhead strips are great for removing blackheads. They are easy to use. All you do is place the strip over the nose for 10 minutes or as directed on the cover of the strip. And pull off. The surface level blackheads will be successfully removed.
Ladies...a word on make up: go non-comedogenic, oil- free. Make sure your make up is not clogging your pores. Go with a mineral powder which is actually good for your skin.
