Removal of acne scars can be done in a variety of ways. One is through injections, usually of collagen. This type of scar treatment can stretch and even out soft scars but is not very effective for more serious ice-pick scars. Like other collagen treatments, it doesn’t last forever, usually 3 to 6 months. Autologous fat transfer, which involves injecting fat from another part of one’s own body, can be effective for elevating depressed scars. This may be effective for 6 to 18 months, until the fat is fully reabsorbed by the body.

Other scar removal techniques focus on the scar’s surface. Dermabrasion, in which a rapidly spinning brush is used to remove or recontour superficial scars, is considered highly effective. Newer microdermabrasion treatments may also be used for less severe scarring, although several treatments may be required before significant effects take hold.

An increasingly common form of acne scar treatment is laser therapy. Expensive but precise and permanent, laser resurfacing can be used to reshape and reduce scarring. Advanced acne laser treatments relying on carbon dioxide lasers can actually completely remove some scars. Advances in this area show great promise for helping those affected by serious acne scarring.

In some cases, doctors may recommend surgery for certain types of acne scars. Some depression scars can be cut away, incising deeper into the body’s layer of fat, and then stitched over. In any case, the particular form of acne scar treatment or removal should be chosen after consulting with a doctor, since the type of scar and an individual’s response to certain techniques must be taken into account.

Laser treatments for scar removal or reduction has been producing outstanding results. Lasers are much more precise than other scar removal techniques such as dermabrasion and chemical peeling. Particularly in combination with other treatments, lasers can have amazing results on acne, even for relatively deep scars. The lasers used promote collagen growth, which can help prevent further breakouts.

Scars are removed with laser treatment. Holes may be “punched out” and the skin surrounding the scar is tightened by the heat of the laser. Laser treatment of acne scars is often done after surgical treatment. As a “resurfacing” technique for mild scarring it is second to none, even with a single treatment. Scar reduction and acne therapy with lasers are often done at the same time, and are proving to be far more effective than other forms of treatment.

About Acne Scars
Acne scars usually result from the more severe types of acne such as the pus-filled cysts or lumps called nodules, but moderate acne may also cause scarring. The chance of scar-development and extent of scarring varies greatly between individuals. The greatest treatment for acne scars is, of course, prevention. In this case it means catching acne problems early and treating them effectively.

Acne scars come in two basic types, resulting either from the loss of tissue or the formation of extra tissue. The first type result in depressions in the skin and include what is known as ice-pick scars, steep-sided depressions often seen on the cheeks. Fibrotic scars are usually hard and steep depressions, while small soft scars may blend with normal skin.

Scars that form from extra tissues – usually a build-up of collagen in response to dermal crisis – are called keloid scars. The collagen piles up into smooth, irregular-shaped masses. The tendency to develop scars of this type appears to be hereditary. Not everyone actually sees this type of scarring as a result of injury, caused by acne or otherwise.
