So what exactly is acne?

Acne is the common name of what is known in the medical world as acne vulgaris. In mild to moderate cases it appears as pimples, zits or spots but in more serious cases it is inflammatory and may appear as cysts, boils or lesions. Acne is most common in puberty and adolescence, affecting over four-fifths of all teenagers. But it is not only a problem for youngsters; in fact, half of all adult women and a quarter of adult men will also suffer from acne.

So what exactly is acne? Well, acne normally forms when a skin pore becomes blocked with dead skin cells, keratin and sebum (a fatty substance). A buildup of oil produced in the sebaceous glands at the base of the pore’s hair follicle provides the breeding ground for the bacterium known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). This is often a result of increased levels of the hormone androgen, which causes increased sebum production.

Acne comes in a few different forms. Most are familiar with what is known as whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads are completely blocked pores with a buildup of oils and dead skin cells behind the blockage. Although easily popped, this is an unwise solution, as it may spread the oils and infection. Blackheads are the result of partially blocked pores. The black dot is not dirt but the skin’s pigment reacting with oxygen.

Other common forms include papules and pustules. Papules are inflamed red pimples with no head. Pustules are basically inflamed whiteheads, with a red circle and a white center.

More severe cases of acne bring the formation of nodules and cysts. Nodules are hard bumps beneath the skin, larger and deeper than your average pimple or zit. They can cause considerable discomfort and even pain, and may persist as a problem for several months. Cysts are similar to nodules but filled with pus. The can also be uncomfortable and painful and take a long time to resolve. Both of these more serious formations should be treated carefully, since improper care can lead to scarring.

Acne prevention is the best method for those with a genetic propensity or family history of acne. Acne prevention is normally founded on proper skin care, although it may also include regulation of hormones – particularly androgen – and stress reduction.

If acne prevention doesn’t work, there are a great range of treatments available, both over the counter and by prescription. These treatments may be topical or taken orally, and often include antibacterials, cleansers, exfoliators, laser treatments, acne skin care regimes like Proactive, and chemical healing agents and Vitamin A creams such as Retin A or Retinol. More aggressive chemical treatments may be accompanied by serious side effects, so it is always important to consult with a professional for guidance in acne treatment. Newer treatments include the use of laser treatments to attack troubled glands and reduce scarring.

Acne scars are one of the most worrisome side effects of acne. Proper prevention and early treatment are the secrets to preventing scarring. Of course, one should not ignore the psycho-social effects of acne. Especially in teenagers, acne can cause great damage to self-esteem and even lead to major depression.
